South Korean Samsung Electronics company has just announced operating system update for Samsung GT-I5700 Galaxy Spica. At present moment this smartphone runs on Google Android 2.1. But soon owners of this device will have an opportunity to update to Android 2.1 via Samsung PC Studio 7. Firware update will be available to download at official Samsung’s web site.

Besides, this device looks very stylish. Unfortunately, there is no any word on pricing or availability date.

Coming MeeGo OS

MeeGo operating system

Just last month Nokia and Intel announced their intention to join their efforts and unite Moblin and Maemo operating systems into one single project called MeeGo. But today Valtteri Halla, director Technology Strategy of Maemo devices, promised that source code of MeeGo will be released by the end of the March. On this basis developers are going to collect operating system for Nokia N900 smartphone and Intel Atom based netbooks and tablet computers. There is no much information about coming operating system but it is known that it will use Qt, OBS and RPM technologies. Besides a number vendors have already informed of their intention to support new OS.

Today during CeBIT 2010 exhibition Asus announced some new mobile devices including its first ebook reader. Asus DR-900 features 9 inch screen with 1024×768 px resolution, 4 Gb built-in storage, Wi-Fi, and 3.5 mm headphones jack. There is also optional 3G module. It is also said that the battery of this e-reader provides viewing of 10,000 pages of text on a single charge. Supported files extensions are PDF, TXT, MP3 and ePUB. Unfortunately there is no any official information about release date and price.

Nokia has just announced its budget class smartphone. Nokia C5 is the first mobile device from new Nokia’s Cseries line. It has monoblock shape and runs on Symbian S60 3rd edition operating system. One of the notable features of this device is contact list. It provides an opportunity to check view the status of friends in popular social networks like Facebook and Twitter. You can also change your status in Facebook, adding to information about your location using Ovi Maps 3.0. The main phone screen displays the three most used contacts. This widget allows you to call these people or send them a message via Google Talk or Windows Live Messenger.
The list of technical characteristics looks good – 2.2 inch screen with 240×320 px resolution and 16 million colors, 3.2 Mp camera with flash, FM radio with RDS, 50 Mb built-in storage, microSD memory card slot (up to 16 Gb), 3.5 mm audio jack, GPS with A-GPS support. Connectivity includes Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, USB 2.0. Supported network standards are GSM/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 MHz and WCDMA/HSDPA/HSUPA 900/2100 MHz. This smartphone measures 112×46x12.3 mm and weights 89g. Nokia C5 will become available in April and will cost €135.

Columbian Haleron company announced its new device. iLet Mini HAL is tablet computer running on Google Android operating system. The main feature of this device is its price - $200. Haleron iLet Mini HAL has 600 MHz VIA processor, 7 inch touchscreen display with 800×480 px resolution, 128 Mb DDR2 RAM, 2 Gb built-in flash storage, SDHC memory card slot, two USB 2.0 ports, stereo loud speacker, 3.5 mm audio jack, . Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 802.11b/g, LAN, and Bluetooth. The battery provides up to 16 hours of work time. Unfortunately there is no information about release date.

During Mobile World Congress 2010 Samsung showed its new flagship device. Samsung S8500 Wave is the world’s first mobile device running on Bada platform. Other remarkable features of this device are its 1 GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor and 3.3 inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display with 800×480 px resolution and 16 million colors. Samsung Wave also features unique user interface that resembles TouchWiz and combines best solutions of competing mobile platforms. For example there is sliding panel that allows you to manage wireless connections. As for other characteristics this high-end device has 5 Mp camera with autofocus and HD video (1280х720px, 30 fps) recording support, 2 or 8 Gb built-in storage, microSD/HC memory card slot, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0 with A2DP, GPS module and 3.5 headphones jack, The dimensions are 118×56x11 mm. The battery has 1500 mAh capacity and provides 100 hours of music playback. Samsung S8500 Wave will become available in May and will cost about $550.

Ericsson eStore apps store for mobile phones

Ericsson has just announced its own application store for mobile phones. In contrast to analogue Ericsson eStore is targeted not at end users but at mobile operators. It allows them to set-up their own apps store to their consumers. At present moment Ericsson eStore includes more than 30 thousand apps both paid and free. It is expected that new online store will also attracts developers – now they their one app will be published via multiple carriers. It is also said that eStore will include applications  both for smartphones (WinMo, Android, Symbian) and usual phones with Java support.

Symbian^3 official announce

Not only Microsoft announced its new operating system for mobile devices. Symbian Foundation also announced new Symbian^3 OS. It will be released in March and first devices running on this platform will become available by the end of the third quarter of this year. The list of key features includes multiply home screens, improved widgets management, hardware acceleration of visual effects, HDMI, multi-touch and fourth generation networks support. It is also notable that Symbian^3 will be completely open source.
